Woolworth
233 Broadway
Once the tallest building in the world, this monstrous cathedral like building houses the headquarters of Woolworth, one of the great retail companies of the first half of this century. It was basically Walmart before there was Walmart. Now because there is Walmart, there is basically no more Woolworth.
Saatchi & Saatchi
375 Hudson St.
Saatchi & Saatchi have their headquarters in some obscure part of Tribeca. Actually, it's just a few blocks from my house. Anyway, they are one of the big New York ad agencies. They do advertising for companies like Toyota, Hewlett-Packard, Johnson & Johnson, Texaco, and Wendy's. I've heard their best days have past. But that is just what I have heard.
Met Life
One Madison Ave
Well if you ask me what these guys do, I would have to say I really don't know. In fact insurance companies like these really baffle me. I don't understand where they make all their money. Maybe I will understand better when I am older or own a business or something. I do know that these are the guys with the Snoopy commercials.
Loral
600 Third Avenue
It seems very appropriate for a defense industry company to be in such a stealthy anonymous looking building. Loral occupies a few floors of this building. The defense industries hey day has passed, but these guys are always up to something. The recently got in trouble with the government for selling satellite technology to the Chinese.
Pfizer
235 East 42nd Street
There is one hot company residing in the crummy looking tall building in this picture. It's Pfizer the maker of Viagra and probably the second most successful pharmaceutical company after Merck. These guys make a serious amount of money and are seriously capitalized by Wall Street. 2 billion on 12 billion of sales.
Conde Nast
350 Madison Avenue
So here is this dumpy old building on Madison and you wouldn't believe what interesting and exciting things are created inside. Magazines, Magazines, Magazines. And some of the best ones. Vogue, In Style, Architectural Digest, and GQ. This building is really a hot spot for some serious magazine publishing. They are owned by Advance Publications which is on Staten Island.
Revlon
625 Madison Avenue
This is a very fitting building for Revlon to be in. It's made of shiny expsenve material and is colored a range of burgundies, browns and gold. Very fitting when you think what these guys do which is make-up and cosmetics for women. They are located Madison Avenue right near all the magazines and ad agencies.
Omnicom Group
437 Madison Avenue
The Omnicom group is headquatered in this building. Also their subsidiary divisions are also in here like BBDO and DDB Needham. This is one of the major advertising companies in New York along with Interpublic Group, Ogilvy & Mather, Young & Rubicam, and Saatchi & Saatchi.
KPMG & Estee Lauder
767 Fifth Avenue
In this building on fifth avenue next to Central Park, we have KPMG, one of the big six accounting firms and Estee Lauder. Estee Lauder has a major share of the women's cosmetics market. Also they own the brand names Tommy Hilfiger, Clinique, Bobbi Brown and Aveda.
Avon & KKR
9 West 57th Street
Two very different companies occupy this sexy sleek tower on West 57th. Avon, maker of women's cosmetics is headquartered here. And Kolberg, Kravits Roberts & Co. are headquartered. They are the malicious eighties takeover firm that invented the concept of leveraged buyout and did just that taking over many major corporations. KKR also owns Primedia
HBO
42nd & Ave of Americas
Here's an interesting one. HBO, the most profitable of the cable TV subscription services. They are a subsidiary of Time Warner just up the road. And they have been getting into making their own movies which don't look that bad compared to big screen movies.
Hearst
959 8th Ave.
Yes, Hearst, as in William Randolph Hearst. This is an old company. And its headquartered in this funny short art deco looking building. (Hearst castle is in California, not here). These guys own lots of newspapers and major magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Newsweek, and Popular Mechanics.
ABC/Disney
77 West 66th Street
This was the headquarters of ABC until Disney bought them recently. Now I guess both guys occupy the building. There are some tv studios in this building. Such as ABC nightly news,
